Located at the heart of the Classic New Zealand Wine Trail, the Wairarapa encompasses five small characterful towns — Martinborough, Featherston, Greytown, Carterton, and Masterton. With several boutique vineyard areas, the region punches above its weight for fine wines. The region’s epic night sky has become an attraction both nationally and internationally. A sizeable chunk of the Wairarapa is officially named a Dark Sky Reserve by the International Dark-Sky Association, meaning it is among one of the best places in the world to view the night sky.

At the start of the year, visitors can enjoy the unique opportunity to pick lavender under the stars. For enthusiasts of literature, Featherston’s Booktown Karukatea Festival in May is a celebration of books, storytelling, and ideas.
